He was born on March 21, 1916, in a small village in Bihar, India, and grew up in a family of musicians.Bismillah Khan was born into a family of court musicians in the princely state of Dumraon in Bihar. His father was a shehnai player at the court of the Maharaja of Dumraon, and his grandfather was a well-known musician at the court of the Nawab of Lucknow.Bismillah Khan started learning the shehnai at a young age and was soon recognized as a prodigy. He gave his first public performance at the age of 14 and went on to perform at various music conferences and concerts across India.
